August 28, 2010 {What A Day!}

Starting again at 6:30 a.m., the weather was finally pleasantly cool and less humid. What a gift! About 14 volunteers arrived, some later, and accomplished all of the laid-out tasks for the day: finishing siding one end of the house, completed caulking the exterior, installed insulation in the exterior walls, and applying a coat of exterior paint to the body of the house (except the trim). What workers these wonderful volunteers are! Food was provided by First Baptist Church, and it was delicious and filling. Thank you, FBC!

Women Build 2010 {Tuesday, August 3, 2010}

On Tuesday, Aug. 3, 24 women from the Polk County community gathered early in the morning to further the home ownership dream of Billie Henderson. Over the next six hours, they would apply siding and roof shingles and lots of caulk. They scrambled over the roof and all around the four sides of the house, as well as inside, where they sheet rocked the enclosure for the water heater. All in all, in spite of the heat and humidity, the women had a grand time under the tutelage of Carrie Hamilton, Cathy Conner, and Willard Moody, construction superintendent.

Already, the women are looking forward to Women Build 2011!

Henderson House {Saturday, July 31, 2010}

There were 43 volunteer builders on the Habitat build on July 31. At least 18 of them were from St. Joseph Catholic Church, under the leadership of Art Martinez, who is a professional builder in "real" life. There were also about a dozen "regulars" from First United Methodist Church, plus several others from First Baptist, Central Baptist, etc. What a wonderful crew they were!

What they accomplished was to finish "wrapping" the gable ends of the house and began installing siding. In addition, a large part of the roof was shingled. Further, fascia and soffit were installed, along with some prep work for installing the roof. Inside, the water heater space was sheet rocked and additional framing was put in place.

The Catholic Daughters from St. Joseph provided food for a morning break as well as lunch. Everything was delicious and bountiful. Thank you, Daughters!

Tomorrow, Aug. 3, will be Women Build day. The next general work day will be Saturday, Aug. 14.

Henderson House {Saturday, July 10, 2010}

Here are some photos from the build activity on Saturday. There were 24 people on the job putting the decking on the roof and preparing for the tar paper (before the shingles). The crew also installed the hurricane clips and trimmed up the rafters.

Henderson House {Saturday, June 19, 2010}

Today, as hot as it was, was a great day on the Henderson house build for Habitat! There were at least 45 people on the job at one time or another. That's got to be a record of some sort. First Baptist Church was the principal team today, and they furnished all of the food and most of the volunteers. What a job they did!

Our board members really came out in force, too. Board members who worked today included Charlie Cline, Ron Green, Carrie Hamilton, Kathy Moody, Angela Goin, DeWayne Oates, Ray Gearing, Terry Clark, Leonor Shukan, and Joe Westmoreland--best representation of the board on a build ever!

Work started at 6:30 a.m., as it will from now on. Interior framing was finished, OSB was applied, corners were insulated, preparations for installing the trusses continued. Forms were built for the storage shed, and the walls and trusses for the shed were constructed, ready to put in place when the slab is in place.

Ray began awarding free tee shirts to volunteers who have put in at least 10 hours on this build. Recipients seemed very pleased to get them. Sponsors for the shirts are First National Bank, First State Bank, Thomas Supply, Red Barn, My Place Eatery, Escapees Club, and Classic Promotions. We thank them all for their support! We have 100 shirts ordered.

On June 26, we will start again at 6:30 a.m. The principal work crew will be from Central Baptist Church, and they will also provide the food for the day. We are looking forward to working with Central for the first time. They will be framing up the storage shed, setting the trusses, and wrapping the house in house wrap. The house will really look like a house when they get finished shortly after noon. We hope to have another record turnout of board members, too (it doesn't matter which church you attend!).

Road Cleanup On Bluebird Street {Saturday, April 24, 2010}

Thank you to the many volunteers that showed up to help clean up Bluebird Street. It was a great morning and one little worker found a $20 bill!
